Voicemail is dead. Email is full of spam. If you’re not already using SMS messaging in your recruiting process, now is the time to start.

Texting sometimes gets a bad rep in the professional world. It’s seen as  impersonal, informal, or confusing for the non tech-savvy. But SMS messaging is the easiest way to reach new candidates and generate fast responses. It’s simple, convenient, and efficient. Texting allows the candidate to read the message whether they’re at home or on the go, and respond at their convenience.

SMS messages are opened 98% of the time, compared to email open rates, which have dropped below 25%. That’s not even counting the emails that bounce back — one in four emails are never delivered. The SMS message response rate is 7.5 times higher than email, and the highest of any form of communication. Using SMS messaging streamlines communication, saving your company time and resources during recruiting.

Like any form of communication, text messaging has its own rules of conduct. Here are some ways to avoid scaring off your best candidates with poor texting etiquette.

Start with an intro. 

Start your message by greeting the candidate and introducing yourself. This will provide context, and prove that you’re not a spammer or a stalker. An brief introduction will improve your response rate.

Wording is key. 

Don’t send a dry, five-paragraph job description in a text message. Your message should be straightforward, but intriguing. Text that are clear, concise, and to the point will generate the fastest responses.

Consider your timing.

Do your best to only text during business hours. Early evening may be acceptable, but make sure you’re not waking up your candidate in the middle of the night. Send your message when your recipien
is likely to be awake and alert. You’ll have a much better chance of getting a response.

Don’t limit yourself.

Texting doesn’t need to be the only tool in your arsenal. There is still a time and a place for emails and phone calls. Consider your recipient, as well as the length, complexity, and urgency of your message.

  1. I’ve never personally used SMS for recruiting, but I can definitely see the advantages, especially for the initial contact. Sometimes it’s difficult to make that first connection and SMS would help establish a framework for further communication via phone or email. Thanks for sharing!
